Layered Gesso Background and Inchie Arts

This week's tutorial from Jackie Pedro is a Layered Gesso Background - her steps to create a fun and textured mixed media panel are so easy to follow.  I made the video for the tutorial, and this is the sample I made, using stamps from Penny Black.

Here's the full background before layers were added... I love the texture of the brush strokes in the gesso.

Here's my finished card. The focal piece is a white 2" Art Square from Inchie Arts, colored with Polychromos Pencils and Shinhan Premium Watercolors.

I used household caulking for some dimension on my panel - this is a great and frugal alternative to artist's modeling paste.

I added a layer of washi tape under the ribbon - I finally found some that I liked when we were in Java last month.

  1. This is a lovely showcase for using mixed media on a card Dina! Beautiful touches of light color here and there, textures and patterns, yet able to still display a focal image :*

  3. This is just darling. I am curious - did you choose the colors for the panel and then color the image to match or vice versa?

  4. Hi Dina! Thanks so much for the great video! Your explanations are really clear. Can you tell us the brand/name of the caulking you use? I have been to the hardware store twice but get confused by all the choices! Thank you!

  5. Loved this post Dina. I have been compiling an order with Ellen Hutson and was able to purchase some larger "inchies" yay! Todays offering was lovely! One of my "very best favoritest" pieces of mixed media from you is when you did art journaling over the hymn sheets. Once the weather is better and I can get out an about I'm on the hunt for an old hymnal. I've really been moving at a snails pace toward mixed media and art journaling - don't know why either. But It continues to tug at my heart more and more. I'm off to take a look at Jackie's video.

Thanks again Dina for all the wonderful inspiration.
