Splitcoast Tutorial: Hot Glue Embossing

Today's tutorial over on Splitcoast is a lot of fun - it's called Hot Glue Embossing, and  it's exactly that - there are several ideas for using hot glue to create an abstract art project and then coating the glue with embossing powder for a really artistic look. It's a beautiful tutorial, and I hope you'll take a peek!

I have a brand new glue gun because my old one decided not to feed glue out any more... I got a 2-temp one from Adtech, in case you happen to be looking for one too. I'm really happy with it!

This card was done with a watercolor panel, a random glue design, gold embossing powder and some dotted wet-into-wet reinkers. The sentiment I used is from Skipping Stones Design.

I did a little spider web doodle for my second card, and embossed with black - the spider background is from Impression Obsession and the letter dies are these ones from My Favorite Things.

2 more cards to tuck into my Hope You Can Cling To box! Hope you're having a great week! Remember to reserve a copy or 2 of the Make Art prints if you haven't done that yet!
Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Oh my gosh!! Dina, this is just so fabulous and beautiful, what a great way to add texture to your cards, I love this ones you made, they are simply beautiful.
I'm going to give this a try, I want to make the spider web, perfect for Halloween.

  5. Dina, I tried a couple of samples after I watched the tutorial. I tried the dribble-doodle style like your card - like how it came out and the gold embossing powder makes it look great. I didn't get good results at all with the first technique - dragging the hot glue down the card. My glue dried too quickly for me to be able to get it to move much. Are you using multi-temp glue sticks or the high temp. ones? I know that the glue gun and the glue sticks could make a difference, just wondering what you're having the best luck with. Thanks.

    1. Hi Linda! I'm using multi-temp glue with my glue on the high setting. This was actually my first run with my new glue gun, so I was pretty pleased.

    2. Thanks, Dina. I'm on my way out to find a 2-temp glue gun and will get the multi-temp sticks as well. I'm using this technique (I'll credit Connie's tutorial on the site) to teach a class in November so want to get more samples done. I posted to the SplitCoast Stampers gallery but I haven't been able to add a comment to thank the many comments I got. Again, thanks for the info re the glue and setting.

  6. Did you do the water color first or after the hot glue? Also, I would imagine that the embossing powder would stick to the tackiness of the hot glue without using Versamark - right? Then, used your hot gun or does the hot glue melt the embossing powder on its own?

    1. Right - the tackiness of the glue is enough to hold the embossing powder. Versamark would be hard to control. Pop over to the tutorial to check - I think you do just briefly use your heat gun to reactivate the top surface of the glue to warm up the powder.
