Mix-Ability Challenge: Feathers

This week's Mix-Ability challenge is to include a feather (real or not) on a mixed media project. Here's my card...

I needed some gel print therapy yesterday. I started by stamping my bird image onto a 3" white Art Square from Inchie Arts, coating the image with a thick layer of masking fluid, and then printing with a few layers of acrylic paint.

To apply the masking fluid, I tried some new tools that I just recently discovered -- these are called Colour Shapers. The tips are made of silicon and are shaped in the same way as other brushes and shaping tools. They can be used with wet or dry media, and they clean off so easily. Other times I've ruined brushes with masking fluid, but this just wiped off with a paper towel... I used one with pastels and just cleaned it with my fingers.

Here's my panel after printing - I used a really thick coat of masking fluid, and that held up well against the acrylic. I was afraid that it might stick to the Gelli Plate, but I didn't have any problems.

The mask peeled off easily to reveal the protected image - the acrylic paint then created a resist around the edge of my bird so I could watercolor within the lines. I used Shinhan and Holbein paints for coloring, as well as an ink pen and Prismacolor pencils.

I stamped over the panel after coloring, then added some more white acrylic paint to soften the background a bit.

I created a watercolor wash for the feathers, letting the colors blend together through the water. The die is from this set.

Here's a closer look at the feather feature... I added some more details to them with a stylus and then with a white pencil after cutting.
