out of the box again...

When I saw this quote I knew what I wanted to do with it - we have friends who are pursuing training in the States to support our coworkers through aviation. I thought immediately of this airplane stamp from ImaginAir Designs (looks like they are out of business - but this is a typical bush plane, and a welcome sight to someone who's stationed in the middle of nowhere!). The colors are a little weird in the picture...the reds and the orange in the postage stamp are not really that bright. Couldn't get it just right...maybe I tried too hard? sigh...

Stamp credits:
saying, script - smARTworks
plane - ImaginAir Designs
postage cancellation lines - Stampa Rosa (not sure who picked up this design - I think it was in their Tin Can Mail line...?)
postmark - Hero Arts
spear, tribal hut - Art Impressions
compass - Stampabilities

The clouds are done with Versamagic Sand chalk ink using a scalloped circle punchout as a mortise mask. Usually for clouds I would use blue chalk or ink and use the circle as the mask to ink the sky above the clouds...since this was a little more monochromatic I decided to ink the clouds instead. I highlighted the plane image with a white gel pen and shaded with a watercolor pencil (Derwent VanDyke Brown), blending with a Dove blender pen. The lower panel is painted with Twinkling H2Os, a piece I was playing with the other day that didn't really turn out the way I wanted it to. Distressing was done with my scissor blade.

I want to learn more about collage - it's not something that comes naturally to me. Maybe I need to just study other people's work and learn by osmosis...

  2. This is beautiful and very rustic. I love how you added the stamp and post mark. The highlighting is wonderful. it is very subtle and keeps that monochromatic color scheme, allowing the color to realy get shown off.

  4. Great clouds -- give the feeling you're among them vs. looking up at them. I like!

  6. EXCELLENT! Very creative. I'll need to remember using a scallop punch to make clouds.
