Splitcoast Tutorial: 3-in-1 Stencil on Stamp Technique

This week's tutorial over on Splitcoast is actually a series of simple techniques with a homemade stencil! I invited Amber to share with us after I saw her cards on Stamp Junkies

The tutorial called for a large solid stamp, and I have several in my stash but chose this large heart from Impression Obsession. In the tutorial a stencil is die cut out of vellum, but I decided to go rogue and cut my stencil out of contact paper because that worked in my head. It did change my results a bit, but not in a bad way! For the first card here, I stenciled directly on my stamp using a stencil cut with this die:

After stenciling I reinked and stamped the full image. There was still ink on the stamp, so I misted next for a second impression with a faux watercolor look.

The next step is to mist the ink left on the stencil and lay it down for a print. Since my stencil was sticky on the back, I didn't have as much control here as I wanted to, and I didn't have a great plan either... if I'd thought it out to this card's completion, I would have laid the stencil over to the side. Not really happy with the lack of contrast behind the sentiment, but I do like the print! Next time I'll think ahead.

For the 4th card, you adhere the stencil to a cardstock base. With a vellum stencil, the ink from the previous steps remains and the spritzing gives it a distressed look. With contact paper, the ink doesn't stick... so I stuck my contact paper onto cardstock and sponged ink into the open areas and then added white acrylic paint around the edge with my finger. The flourish in the background is actually the negative die cut from the piece I used in the first card.

So - simple techniques but a fun process! I hope you'll give it a try!
