Mix-Ability Challenge: Block It Off

It's my turn this week to host the Mix-Ability challenge over on Splitcoast - this week we're blocking off a 2-inch strip and doing our mixed media magic between the lines.

Kae Pea over at Rubber Moon has been challenging herself and her creative friends to FINISH projects from that half-done pile... This 3-inch Art Square from Inchie Arts had some stenciling on it that I wasn't happy with, so I gave it a couple of coats of gesso and started over. I made sure to leave some brush strokes in the gesso for texture.

I masked off a 2" strip at a random angle, dropped a few drips of craft paint into the space, and then scraped the paint around. I used a tissue to lift a little more of the paint and add some texture.

When the paint was dry, I added a couple of layers of stamping with a leaf from my layered Oak set, then added some texture with a script stamp.

I used a Zig marker to add some shading to the edges of the masked area, then removed the mask and filed the piece to lighten the painted area and take advantage of some of the texture in the gesso. I scrawled a quick sentiment with a ball point pen, used my MISTI to position the sentiment in the open area, and added some defining lines to the edges of the masking.

On the card base, I die cut some small leaves in a semicircle, then positioned the Art Square inside the curve.

This is a fun challenge that can be used with so many card styles - I hope you'll give it a try!

  1. I love the use of the designer piece inside the curve of the die cut leaves. Great idea! TFS!
