Mix-Ability - Brown Paper Collage

It's my turn this week to host the Mix-Ability challenge over at Splitcoast! I found my inspiration at brownpaperbagart, a fun little store on etsy hosted by Naoko Stoop.

The challenge is to use:
1. brown paper as the base (so use a paper bag or kraft paper)
2. a painted, printed or sponged background (masked hills seem common to many of her pieces)
3. hand cut or die cut elements to finish the scene, cut from text paper (phone book, newsprint, magazine or book pages)

I started with a kraft panel, and used a brayer and homemade stencil to create some backgrounds with acrylic paint. Here's my stencil - because it's wide, I can flip it or move it from side to get the highs and lows in different places. I was working quickly and the paint stuck to the stencil in some places, which gave it a cool distressed look.

I used phone book pages for my die cuts (Deer Trio, Leafy Branch), and added some shading with a marker and water-soluble graphite pencil. The snow is acrylic paint, dotted with a small stylus.

My card base was embossed with a Darice folder - I rubbed a white ink pad over the raised areas to lightly highlight the wood grain.

  2. This would be a lovely Christmas card. Quite a challenge to fulfil, but you have absolutely succeeded! Love the distressed hills and 'phone book' deer and branches particularly. Thank you for the link to Naoko Stoop on Etsy - fascinating. May I ask what you've edged your deer panel with? I've been going cross-eyed trying to figure it out!
