Mix-Ability - Take it away!

Janelle's Mix-Ability challenge for us this week is to create a project using a décollage style.  Here's her description:  "Create with your favorite mixed media techniques and then take away from it. Try tearing away paper layers or wiping paint away from a stencil layered on top. (Try using rubbing alcohol to take off paint layers) Use candle wax before you add acrylic paint and then heat and rub away for the "peeled" paint look."

If you've been around me for a while, you know that I am usually ahead a week or two on projects. In all kindness to myself, I'm just not there right now, and I have to keep reminding myself that that's ok! Family medical issues, an intercontinental move, and culture stress are sort of a big deal after all... *sigh*

So I made this card last night! The base started as a spray painting experiment with layered stencils (started a few months ago), and it took a couple more layers as I played... I brayered white acrylic paint, then spritzed with water and dabbed to remove some of the paint. I added a little stamped texture using stamps from Impression Obsession.

I stenciled some Inka Gold in the corner, and since it's wax-based, I thought I'd try spritzing green shimmer spray over it, then melting it away. I've done a similar technique with Micro Glaze but I wasn't sure where that was, and I thought the Inka Gold might act the same. Well... it didn't remelt. It actually got a little crackly and flaky. Not what I was going for, but sort of cool too. I scraped parts of it off for a more imperfect look.

You'd think I'd know by now that things can be beautiful, even if they don't go the way I planned. ;)

Happy weekend!
 Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Yes, things can be beautiful even when it isn't how you imagined it to be. This card did turned out lovely!

The crackling on the InkaGold looks authentic antique. I'm going to try that next time I open up the jar.

  3. VERY nice card. A move may be in my immediate future also and I dread packing all my creative stuff. Any tips for me?

  5. I am glad you are trying to be kind to yourself...that is a lot to deal with all at once. You definitely don't need to apologize to us...we will be here when you are ready to post...although it is also good that you feel you can express your concerns on your blog too. Anyway, I always love your work! And although I have only been making cards for 4 or 5 years...I have been looking at your work since then because I love Impression Obsession and follow there blog. And have come to love Sweet and Sassy now too who I know you also design for. Best of luck. And happy early Mother's Day! Thanks for sharing.
