Watercolored ATC

I've been pushing myself to do original paintings more this year... I do love stamping, but it's nice, too, to document little snippets of life here, and create something very unique. I have done a few floral watercolor ATCs, but a recent Facebook conversation reminded me about some of the beautiful insects we see here, so I decided to paint a beetle this time.

We met this little guy during a ladies' day out in town - I think he landed on my purse. He was a beautiful bug! I painted him a little larger than life - he was only about an inch long, I think.

I started with a simple pencil sketch on a white matboard ATC from Inchie Arts (I had a picture of it at that stage, but I can't find it now...), then began layering color with Shinhan Premium Watercolors - this type of watercoloring is interesting in that it requires pretty intense study of the colors and blending patterns in the reference photo, and also requires patience in letting layers dry completely.

Here's a closer look... the ATC size Art Squares are a great choice for watercolor paints as the surface is so similar to a hot press paper. This is such a fun size too, at 2.5" x 3.5".

Here is an angled view so you can see the shimmer of the Twinkling  H2Os I layered over top... I was hoping that would give it a yellow shine, but instead it lifted some of the green pigment. Grrr... but I do like the shimmer. :)

  1. Iam so impressed with your drawing and painting skills. I have just begun to venture outside of stamping to drawing in my own, but it started with faces. This is a lovely painting, very realistic and you picked a pretty insect (there is a sentence I never thought I would utter. . . Lol!) to work from.
